Canadian Rockies - August 2017

Updated: Dec 1, 2018

Your adventure starts here, its one you will never forget.

After completing this adventure, my advice to you is if you are thinking of doing something out of your comfort zone, what are you waiting for life is too short for indecision.

Just do it!!

I booked this trip through Exodus travels. I wanted a trip with some adventure, so I choose a 13 day walking trip through the Canadian Rockies. (I mean why wouldn't you.) When I told people what I was doing, I am sure that they thought that I was mad.

So it was with nervous excitement that I booked this trip, making sure my flight connections and accommodation were all booked - double and triple checking everything. All I can say is WOW. The whole trip was fabulous. Those big mountains are amazing. We had 11 hikers of varying ages and 2 guides. Our guides were well organised and knew their stuff. We camped in camp grounds at different locations throughout the Rockies. Each day we completed a different walk and each day was as good if not better than the day before. The views, the wildlife and the Canadian people made the trip extremely worthwhile. My only disappointment was not seeing a bear, but maybe that is a good thing, especially as we were camping.

Here is some advice from the trip notes about the walks:

"This is a relatively demanding trekking holiday and you will need to be fit if you want to undertake all of the planned walks. A full day hike will last between 6 and 8 hours and half day walks will be 4 hours or less. The walks are at an average of 2000m with a maximum of 2689m. Details of the length of each walk and altitude gain are specified in the itinerary. Almost all of the walking is on well-marked trails. None of the walks are technically difficult, but some are on steep trails, over large stones and/or scree slopes"

Why did I choose this walk?

I wanted a walking adventure

How did I cope?

Very well, I had done a lot of training.

What training did I do?

Lots and lots of walking. Hard to training for heights in New Zealand when most of our hills are a lot lower than these mountains.

Would I do it again?

Absolutely - looking for my next adventure.

To give you an idea of where I walked and where we camped - have a look at the map below?

Calgary, Lake Louise, Banff, Jasper, Waterton, Calgary

Need to start saving for my next big adventure.
