We had been camping in the campground in nearby Hahei and decided to walk to Cathedral Cove. It is February 2018, so most people in New Zealand have finished their summer holidays and have gone back to work. How wrong could I be.
It was a lovely sunny day, so we packed water and food supplies and off we went. The track is in very good condition and easily walkable, however it is advisable to wear sturdy shoes. It is quite steep on the way back, take your time and rest a while along the way and enjoy the spectacular views that the Cathedral Cove track provides.
Upon arrival, we found a spot of free sand, dumped out gear and raced for the clear sparking water for a swim. At this time of the year in New Zealand, the water is warm and clear. The incoming waves provide some body surfing entertainment. Several people took picnics and were enjoying the area for the whole day.
Part way through the track, there is a World War 1 Memorial Forest, honouring those who gave their lives at Gallipoli. I thought it was a wonderful tribute and we all took a moment to give thanks.
If you are in Coromandel, this is a interesting walk to add to your list of must-dos, the spectacular scenery, and iconic Cathedral Cove rock is a must see. The round trip takes about one and a half hours, but it is worth adding in time for a swim or a walk along the beach when you get there.
