Whangarei Heads - New Zealand

Ocean Beach Carpark to Bream Head (Te Whara) Scenic Reserve

When I heard that there you need to climb 1200 steps at the start of this walk at the Scenic Reserve end, I decided to skip the steps and start this walk at the Ocean Beach end. Great decision if you don't like steps as there are a lot of steps along the path as well as the initial 1200. This walk takes about 5-7 hours to complete and requires a high level of fitness.

The day we walked this walk, the weather couldn't decide whether to rain or be sunny however, I still managed to take in and enjoy the magificient views and bush scenery.

When you start at the Ocean Beach end, as you walk up the hill take the time to pause and view that beautiful Ocean Beach. The day we walked it there were surfers in the water, but at other times people have seen whales and dolphins crusing on by.

View down to Ocean Beach

Along several areas of this coast line are trees that have been wind battered and salt sprayed, its amazing that they are still standing. There is lots of bush and birdlife to walk through and enjoy. It was a magical experience to have the fantails fluttering in front and around us.

As there has been quite a lot of rain, the track was extremely muddy and slippery in areas. I was glad I had worn my walking boots. The track is quite undulating and rocky in parts, you need to take care to not rush your journey. Why would you with this breath taking scenery to take in.

Great bush and views along the track

At the summit which is 476 metres above sea level, stop and rest a while, there are 360 degree views for you to enjoy. Part of this view includes Marotere (Hen and Chickens group) and Aorangi (Poor Knights). We stopped and had lunch here, it was certainly a beautiful spot, the rain clouds has disappeared and allowed us to enjoy the amazing views.

There are several other shorter walks available in this area. Have a look at Mt Manaia, Mt Aubrey or the walk around Busby Head, which takes in the beautiful Smugglers Cove beach.
