When I was younger I was always fit. I was brought up on a farm, where my brother, sister and myself used to run around for hours. We never got puffed or tired out. Bare feet were the norm, we would wear them all summer. By the end of summer our feet were as hard as nails and we could walk on almost any surface with our hardened summer surfaced feet.
Now days its a different story, I need to train to get my feet and body ready for longer walks.
So here I am on Saturday morning, donning my boots and sunscreen preparing to get my feet walk ready. I had planned to walk about 10 km this morning and go up 3 of Auckland's volcanoes - Mt Hobson, Mt St John and Mt Eden. It was a beautiful day, almost too hot for a walk, as I neared the 6 km mark, I found myself thinking if I went straight I could be home in less than a kilometer, out of this heat and into a cool shower, but if I turn left, I head up the road to Mt Eden and another 4 km of mostly uphill walking in the hot sun.
I decided to turn left and head up the hill. I had to keep my mind on the end goal and to make sure my feet are walk ready. I knew when I would be doing my hike in April, that I would be walking all day and who knows what the weather will be like. When I reached home, I felt great, my feet and legs held up - ALL GOOD.
Did I really need to train after all?
The next day was a different story, my knees ached and my feet were complaining. Age is catching up with me. Don't worry though as next weekend I'll be out again getting my feet walk ready.
